The UK government is quite serious about incorporating wireless charging for electric cars in its civil infrastructure, it’s going to start testing under-road wireless charging for electric cars later this year. This will effectively allow EVs to travel greater distances without running out of charge and could aid in boosting adoption of electric cars. This is not going to be a quick process though as testing may last for nearly two years before a decision is made to bring this technology to public roads.
Highways England has announced today that it will conduct testing off-road of wireless charging technology aimed at electric cars and hybrids, the aim is to bring this technology to the country’s major roads. Tests are expected to begin by the end of this year once under-road technology to replicate motorway conditions and the right EV is sourced.
Tests will run for about 18 months after which Highways England hopes to start conducting tests with wireless charging infrastructure on public roads across the country.
Britain’s government has pledged north of $750 million for this project which will be disbursed over the next five years, a feasibility study for this project has already been conducted which looked into ways to install this technology under major roads as well as the process for retrofitting existing EVs and hybrids to take advantage of the project.
