Twitter has stuck with its 140 character limit through thick and thin, it’s integral to the microblogging service so it’s safe to say that tweets aren’t going to be any longer than that at least for the foreseeable future. However Twitter has changed the rules for direct messages or DMs, the company announced today that it has removed the 140 character limit from DMs.
It’s now possible to chat on and on in Direct Messages since they’re no longer limited to 140 characters, this change follows after Twitter allowed group DMs and allowed users to receive DMs from anyone even if they didn’t follow them.
Tweets are largely meant for the public while Direct Messages are private between one or more recipients, they’re more focused towards private conversations and that’s one of the reasons why Twitter is removing the limit to make private conversations on its microblogging network more powerful and fun. Twitter reiterates that this changes nothing for tweets, they’ll continue to be capped at 140 characters.
The company is rolling out this change today across its Android and iOS apps as well as on Twitter for Mac, TweetDeck and on twitter.com. It will be rolled out worldwide over the coming weeks. Users should keep in mind that sending and receiving DMs using SMS will still be limited to 140 characters.
