Slow progress is being made to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and go with cleaner alternatives, it may be slow but it’s progress nonetheless. Some countries are setting extremely ambitious goals to shift to renewable energy sources and the Dutch has joined that list of nations, they aim to run their entire rail system completely on wind power by the year 2018.

According to a report the Eneco energy company and VIVENS rail company have struck a deal which will make the country’s electric trains in the Netherlands Railway run solely on energy produced at wind farms.

It’s not like this is going to be a major change for the country or the railway system for that matter. Wind farms are already supplying the network with half of its energy needs, keep in mind that this is a network that transports close to 1.2 million people every single day, so technically the Dutch are already half way there.

One objective of this initiative is to promote more adoption of renewable energy sources in European countries, much of the wind power will come from farms in The Netherlands and some from Belgium as well as other Scandinavian countries.

Eneco is committed to a future where renewable energy reigns supreme, the company has also signed an agreement with Google to switch its data center completely to wind power as well.
