To be more specific, 11 users who allegedly pirated the movie “The Cobbler” were sued, with the studio claiming that these users should have been more than aware of what they were doing when they were using Popcorn Time’s services. According to the lawsuit, the studio wrote, “Popcorn Time exists for one purpose and one purpose only: to steal copyrighted content.”
The studio also adds, “Without a doubt, each user of Popcorn Time is provided multiple notices that they are downloading and installing software for the express purpose of committing theft and contributing the ability of others to commit theft by furthering the Bit Torrent piracy network.” The lawsuit is also seeking a permanent injunction against the defendants, and could also be seeking statutory damages of up to $150,000, yikes!
That being said, the reality is that these individuals will probably be offered a settlement for a figure much less than what they are demanding, as is usually the case in these types of situations, although it will still end up being a rather pricey lesson nonetheless.
