The Ohm car battery is a battery that weighs only 6 pounds, meaning that changing it and removing it from your car will be a cinch. It will also make your car lighter overall if that’s what you’re going for as well. How its creators managed to do this is why using an EDLC supercapacitor along with a smaller set of LiFePO4 batteries to help keep things powered even when the engine is off.
This results in a lighter and smaller battery, but in order to get it to work with most cars, they encased into a case that’s about the same size of a regular car battery. While this might seem like a waste of space, they’ve decided to take advantage of that by adding extra features, such as including circuitry that monitors the battery’s supercapacitor potential output.
This means that if you forget to turn off your car’s lights, you won’t wake up to a dead battery the next day. Instead it will monitor the supercapacitor and when it decides it’s nearly at the point where you won’t be able to start your car, it’ll turn itself off. It is also said to come with a lifespan of 7 years which is about double that of your standard car battery.
Unfortunately these features make it more expensive than your regular battery as the company has estimated that it will cost $200 upon its release. They are currently conducting a private beta testing of the battery and expect to launch a crowdfunding campaign in the next month or so which is when you’ll get your chance to get one for yourself.
