If a new report is to be believed Google is working on an affiliate program for Google Play that’s not unlike the one that Apple has for its online content store, the affiliate program is said to be in early stages of development at this point in time and the possibility exists that it might either be shelved completely or changed significantly between now and the time it goes public.
The report also adds that this program is being powered by Performance Horizon Group which is the same company that started supporting Apple’s affiliate program back in 2013.
9to5Google hears from a source briefed on the matter that Google’s affiliate program will initially cover content that’s sold through Play Movies and Music but will eventually be expanded to cover apps as well as hardware sold through the Play Store and Google Store respectively.
Google does have experience of running an affiliate service, it ran one of its own called Google Affiliate Network, but that service was shut down in 2013 to focus on other products that would have the “biggest impact for our advertisers and publishers.”
There has been no official comment on this report from Performance Horizon or Google, we’ll keep following this closely to see if any more evidence surfaces of Google’s new affiliate program for the Play Store.
