Google has gradually been increasing the presence of its Google Fiber service across the country and the latest city to which the service will be expanded has been confirmed today. San Antonio is getting Google Fiber, joining the list of upcoming cities which includes Charlotte, Atlanta and Nashville. This is the first expansion-related announcement that Google has made since it confirmed back in January this year that Fiber will be headed to Raleigh-Durham and the aforementioned cities.
San Antonio, with its population of over 1.4 million, is one of the biggest and fastest growing cities in the country and it’s actually the largest Fiber city to date. It has a thriving tech scene which will surely appreciate the arrival of gigabit internet.
Sure, Google has made the announcement, but a lot of work needs to be done before San Antonio can take advantage of Google Fiber. The company is now in the design phase of building its fiber network in the city and it will have to work closely with city leaders to plan the layout for over 4,000 miles of fiber-optic cables.
Google does point out that this is no small task and says that it will take some time, “but we can’t wait to get started.”
