At the moment a lot of people use Facebook to hear about the news. Sometimes there’s breaking news but unless you’re actively following a publication’s page or Twitter account, you might only see it a couple of hours later, which by then it won’t be as hot anymore. However according to a report from Business Insider, Facebook is working to change that.
The social network is said to be working on a standalone mobile news app that will be able to deliver breaking news mobile devices. This means that if you love reading the news and staying as up to date as possible, this app will constantly notify you when something new and newsworthy hits the internet.
The details of the app remain a bit murky at this point, but basically it will be a standalone app. Users will be able to choose the news outlets they want to get notifications from, along with topics that they might be interested in. So far not all publications will be part of this initiative as Facebook has only chosen a few to work with at the start.
The notifications will be similar to tweets where publications can blast out a short 100 character message to go with it. It sounds like an interesting app and one that could possibly compete with Twitter for delivering the latest news to mobile devices. However Facebook has declined to comment on the possibility of such an app, so hopefully we will be able to find out more soon.
