Chrome On Mac Might Have Just Gotten Faster

It is no secret that Google’s Chrome browser on Mac computers isn’t the best performing browser out there. In fact a recent test revealed that Chrome is still a battery drain on Macs and that using Safari could actually give you an hour more in terms of surfing time. That being said, it looks like Google might have done some work to improve upon it.

This was noticed by Owen Williams of The Next Web where he found that in the latest test build for Chrome, Chrome 46 for Mac to be specific, the performance of the browser was considerably smoother. This was evidenced by how much memory the browser was consuming which apparently has been slashed to about half.

Williams also notes that his laptop’s fans don’t whir as loud anymore, and that tabs closing don’t feel as sluggish as before. This apparently is thanks to the Chromium team who have been working to improve its graphics performance on Mac, as well as focusing on plugging memory leaks.

They are also experimenting with a feature where tabs are put to sleep if they are not being used, thus reducing the amount of memory consumed. No word on when the new and improved Chrome will be released, but for those who are interested in taking the test build for a spin, you can download it via Google’s Chrome website.
