Video games for the most part usually feature great stories, interesting characters that have unique looks and traits to them. All of this seems ripe for movies which is why there is a certain appeal in trying to bring video games to the big screen. In fact the latest video game to be adapted to movies will be 2K’s Borderlands.
This was confirmed by the game’s Twitter account and a report from Variety in which it was revealed that Lionsgate will be behind the production of the movie, along with producers Avi and Ari Arad who have been involved in other popular franchises, such as Iron Man, Spider Man, X-Men, Blade, and so on.
While it is unclear as to what kind of movie we can expect, the setting of the game does remind us a bit of Mad Max and according to Lionsgate’s co-chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger, “The ‘Borderlands’ games don’t pull any punches, and we’ll make the movie with the same in-your-face attitude that has made the series a blockbuster mega-franchise.”
That being said, we’ll have to admit we are skeptical. Previously video game movie adaptions have never really turned out well. The most recent is Hitman: Agent 47 which is a reboot of the previous movie, but even then it seems that it has received many negative reviews. Other movie adaptations in the works include Assassin’s Creed, Uncharted, and Blizzard’s World of Warcraft.
