For those who are unfamiliar, smart locks are basically a more hi-tech lock where instead of relying on a key, you can use your smartphone to unlock it. Granted there are locks that use key cards, but with smart locks, you can use it with an app and share the “key” with your guests, change access on the fly, and so on.
The August smart lock is a perfect example of such a lock. Previously it was only compatible with smartphones but if you have a smartwatch like the Apple Watch, you might be interested to learn that the August smart lock app has recently been updated and will now support the Apple Watch, meaning that you can now unlock your door using your watch.
In a way this is a lot more convenient since your way is already on your wrist, versus having to take your phone out of your pocket. The features of the Apple Watch app will remain more or less the same as its smartphone version. It will let owners share the key with their guests (making it perfect for Airbnb hosts), set time limits, and so on.
One of the unique features of the August smart lock is the fact that installation is relatively fuss-free. Since it basically sits on top of existing locks, it shouldn’t take too long to get it in place. In our review of the device, it took us about 10 minutes to set everything up and we did it all by ourselves.
