Last month online dating website Ashley Madison was hacked. The hackers stole the data and threatened to release it online if their demands weren’t met. Unsurprisingly the demands were a bit high which basically asked the website and its affiliated websites to be shut down, and obviously this isn’t something its owners could abide by.
Turns out the hackers made good on their word and have since posted the hacked/stolen data onto the dark web. According to reports, the upload of user data weighs in around 9.7GB and was uploaded to the dark web using an Onion address through the Tor browser. The data is said to comprise of account details such as login credentials.
It is also reported that that credit card and other payment details are part of the data dump, so safe to say there are a lot of Ashley Madison users out there who will need to create new logins and cancel their credit cards, lest they start getting charged for items they did not buy.
According to the Impact Team who is behind the hack, “We have explained the fraud, deceit, and stupidity of ALM and their members. Now everyone gets to see their data…. Keep in mind the site is a scam with thousands of fake female profiles. See ashley madison fake profile lawsuit; 90-95% of actual users are male. Chances are your man signed up on the world’s biggest affair site, but never had one. He just tried to. If that distinction matters.”
Owners of Ashley Madison, Avid Life Media, have since responded to the hack calling it an illegal action and that “they will not sit idly by and allow these thieves to force their personal ideology on citizens around the world.”
