Ever wanted to get a tattoo but can’t find an artist that you like? Or maybe it’s too expensive? As it turns out art graduate student Jakub Pollág has the answer for you in the form of the Personal Tattoo Machine. As the name implies, this is a tattoo machine designed for home use and it is also meant to be affordable and more accessible.
According to its description, “Personal Tattoo Machine aims to democratise the tattoo industry. It gives a tool used only by a limited group of people into the hands of enthusiasts who are seeking for an alternative and unique way to permanently mark their meaningful memories onto their skin.”
He adds, “Personal Tattoo Machine is a simple and affordable mechanism that uses a few standard off shelf products, like sterile needles and tubes. The primary goal is to give the user a quality tool that is safe and comfortable to use.” While it does sound more accessible, we can only imagine the tattoo industry frowning very heavily on this idea.
Tattoo artists who tend to work from home without any formal training or apprenticeship are typically referred to as scratchers (note there are plenty of renowned tattoo artists who work from home/private studios). With the creation of the Personal Tattoo Machine, it almost seems to encourage the practice which can actually lead to legal troubles.
Let’s not forget the possible health issues that could crop up if the user is not familiar with the idea of sterilization and cross contamination. Either way the Personal Tattoo Machine has yet to go on sale as they are currently seeking investors, but in the meantime any tattoo artists out there or people who have been tattooed care to share their thoughts on it?
