Apple already offers the Retina Display on the iMac, you just have to be willing to spend a significant amount of money on the 27 inch 5K Retina iMac. Even though it’s now down to $1,999 instead of $2,499 when it was first launched adding a few more extras to the computer can really rack up the bill and not everybody has that kind of money to spend. There have been rumors that a 21.5 inch iMac with 4K Retina Display could be in the pipeline and the latest beta of OS X El Capitan hints at that possibility.
A couple of images have been spotted by Consomac in the latest beta of OS X El Capitan which show two new 5K iMacs as well as a brand new image with attributes hinting at a 21.5 inch iMac with 4K Retina display.
This particular model is going to have native resolution of 4,096×2,304 which would make it possible for users to watch 4K video in native resolution without having to scale down.
The icon shows the exact same design as the previous model which might mean that Apple won’t be making any changes to the iMac’s design this time around. It should be mentioned here that only recently it was reported that Apple could launch refreshed iMacs in this quarter so this latest discovery reiterates that belief.
Existing 21.5 inch iMac starts at $1,099 and there’s obviously going to be a price increase for the Retina Display model, we just don’t know yet how much of a premium it would carry over the current model.
