Things around the home do seem to get smarter and smarter these days, and hence, it is far from surprising to hear that there is a new smart mirror in the pipeline that is known as the Wize Mirror. The Wize Mirror intends to play the role of a seasoned primary care physician who tend to be able to notice symptoms in a patient by simply taking a look at them. Signals to watch out for are skin tone, heart rate, and body temperature, and the Wize Mirror will make use of a camera, sensors and other technologies to do the same.
This is an effort by a consortium of EU researchers, where the Wize Mirror will hopefully replace your bathroom mirror, as it helps to keep an eye on you every single morning, hopefully catching signs of cardio-metabolic diseases right from the get go. The 3D scanning camera is important here, where it will hopefully pick up changes to the structure of one’s skin, while detecting one’s heart rate and hemoglobin levels. There are plans to initiate trials in Europe so that the Wize Mirror’s benefits can be identified more clearly.
Smart mirrors are not exactly a new innovation, although “progress” in this particular department would more or less see additional functions being thrown into the mix. For instance, this year we saw a DIY Smart Mirror that shows off notifications from smartphones and tablets, while there is also a Panasonic Digital Mirror that targets the medical rehab niche. Alternatively, a Cardiocam Mirror shows off your heart rate, while there is an Android-powered Seraku prototype mirror that did not really make it to the production line. Still, the Wize Mirror is worth looking into, pardon the pun.
