According to the folks at Kotaku, Oculus claims that they deserve to own the domain name and have argued that the group’s “use and exploitation of the Oculus Marks constitutes cybersquatting, trademark infringement, trademark dilution, and/or unfair competition in violation of applicable law.”
They have also filed an official complaint with the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) which typically deals with squabbles over domain name issues such as this. Now to be fair, the owners of OculusRift.com are not cyber-squatting. Instead they have used the domain to create a developer forum for fans and hobbyists who might be interested in developing games and applications for virtual reality.
Ivan Smirnov, the developer who registered the domain back in 2012 told Kotaku, “We’re a team of VR enthusiasts. We considered ourselves a part of the Oculus developer community. We’ve been building a developer-oriented community on social media and oculusrift.com for the last couple of years. As volunteers, [we spent] our personal time helping the company.”
That being said, Oculus has since sent a legal letter to them, asking them to transfer the domain and that they will not be paying them a single cent. We have a feeling that Oculus VR might win this battle, but what do you guys think?
