NVIDIA today finally released Android 5.1 for the original Shield Portable, the device is making the jump to Lollipop from Android 4.4 KitKat. Naturally Shield Portable owners have had to wait for a considerable amount of time to get a taste of Lollipop but now that the update is finally here they can get down to the business of downloading and installing it on their device.

Aside from bringing everything that comes part and parcel of Lollipop the update also removes some games and features that were limited to the previous KitKat software for the Shield Portable.

The original Shield Portable has now been upgraded to the latest version of Lollipop OS, it includes fix for a bug that didn’t allow books to be read in the Google Play Books app. The update permanently removes Sonic 4, Episode II, Expendable: Rearmed and Android Browser.

Also included in the Android 5.1 update for Shield Portable is support for Chromecast, it can now be used to throw content up to the big screen. Chromecast support takes away Miracast support so keep that in mind next time you’re wondering why the Shield Portable won’t work with your Miracast enabled TV.

NVIDIA has started rolling out the update today, it weighs in at over 430MB so expect to wait a while as it downloads particularly if you have a slow internet connection.
