LINE is a messenger app that you may or may not have heard of. The app is extremely popular in Asia, like in Thailand where they actually sell t-shirts and plushies of LINE characters, and there is even a LINE cafe as well! That being said, it looks like the company is following in the footsteps of Facebook by launching LINE Lite.
For those who are hearing about this for the first time, Facebook launched Facebook Lite back in June. The app was designed for emerging markets where cellular internet might not be as fast or readily available, so that despite these setbacks, users would still be able to get the same Facebook experience, or at least close enough.
This is pretty much the same thing that LINE is trying to do with its LINE Lite app. According to the company, the lite version of their app weighs less than 1MB in size, making it a relatively quick download for markets where internet is slow or unreliable. It will also retain the app’s core features such as messaging (obviously), stickers, and other forms of multimedia, save for voice/video calls.
Ultimately the company will be rolling it out to countries such as Algeria, Cambodia, Colombia, Egypt, India, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Korea, and Vietnam, but for now the first phase will only include India, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia.
