Geeksphone Bids Goodbye To Smartphone Business

It is without a doubt that the smartphone industry is an extremely competitive one – after all, there are simply so many players out there, and many of them have already been in the market for quite some time, that they have their fair share of loyal followers. With that, do you remember the Blackphone which was said to be extremely secure in its communications? Geeksphone was the Spanish hardware startup that teamed up alongside security software experts Silent Circle to work on the Blackphone. Sad news then, as it has been announced that Geeksphone will be bidding adios to the phone business.

Founded in 2008, Geeksphone has rolled out a grand total of half a dozen smartphones, which pales in comparison when one places it alongside the likes of Samsung, HTC, etc. Geeksphone claims that they will make everything to be open source, keeping their fingers crossed that this will be able to benefit the community.

As for Geeksphone’s hardware engineers and co-founder Javier Aguera, they will make the transition to new jobs at Silent Circle, which means Silent Circle will be the lone ranger spearheading the BlackPhone project sans its former hardware partner. Well, I guess as long as the BlackPhone project is not shelved, this can be seen as a silver lining in such a particular cloud, right?
