The E1 is not a GoPro creation. Instead it is made by a company called Z. However the device is almost as small as the GoPro, but at the same time packs an interchangeable lens system. The E1 is made from a magnesium housing and will feature a Panasonic Micro Four Thirds image sensor.
It will play nicely with Olympus and Panasonic mirror-less lenses so if you have any of those lying around, it could potentially work with it. This opens up all sorts of possibilities, such as recording videos with wide-angle lenses, zoom lenses, fish-eye lenses, and etc. It even has the ability to capture 4K video albeit at 24 frames per second.
The E1 camera also comes with its own LCD display but there is an accompanying smartphone app that lets you use it as a display as well. The device is expected to start shipping in December and if you’d like to pledge to its Kickstarter, you still can.
"THE E1 IS NOT MEAN TO BE AN ACTION CAM" Ubergizmo’s co-founder Hubert Nguyen talked to Z’s CEO whic made it clear that the E1 is not mean to be an “action cam”. It does however blend the advantages of having a small body and being controllable with an app, along with the ability to use large optics with various apertures and zoom capabilities, which action cams don’t have.
Instead, the E1 camera could be used for professional or semi-professional situations where it can be installed at fixed locations – or on a drone – and remotely activated when it is needed.
It has the great advantage of being able to stay in sleep mode for days at a time, which means that it can be installed in advance in very complex setups such as concerts. It can also be activated during mid-flight on a drone to maximize the battery life.
