During the company’s Innovation Days 2015, they took the wraps off their latest experiment – the BMW hydrogen 5 Series GT. This is based on a 5 Series Gran Turismo model which will sport hydrogen fuel cell technology that was jointly developed with Toyota. Hydrogen has been seen as the alternative to electric cars, namely because unlike EVs, they will not need to be charged.
So what’s the difference between BMW’s latest model and its previous attempts? For starters it is fast at 245 horsepower. It can also travel a great deal further than its predecessor. The BMW Hydrogen 7 managed 124 miles, while the Hydrogen 5 managed more than twice that amount with a range of 300 miles.
Of course it might be a while before we see these hydrogen-powered cars on the road. BMW is working with Toyota to create industry-approved components by 2020, so it looks like until then, electric cars and hybrids will still be viable alternatives if you want to drive a more eco-friendly vehicle.
