That being said, this has not deterred Baidu one bit. Speaking to the folks at Re/code, Baidu’s CEO Robin Li revealed that Baidu is still interested in buying the company’s technology, claiming that it will help with their global mapping efforts. “We’re still interested. We only have the Chinese [mapping] data right now. We need the global mapping data going forward.”
In fact prior to this, both Nokia and Baidu have had a working relationship in which Nokia’s Here mapping technology would be used to power Baidu’s own maps. Previous reports also revealed that Baidu had teamed up with Uber to purchase Nokia’s Here maps, but given that Uber has since lost out on the bid, it is unclear who Baidu might team up with next.
When asked about it, all Li had to say was, “I cannot say too much about it because it’s not a done deal.” In any case we suppose we’ll just have to wait and see who might walk away with Nokia’s Here technology, but for now it looks like the German carmakers have it.
