Their fierce rivalry in the global mobile device market has not stopped both companies from working together, Apple and Samsung have had a robust relationship as far as component sourcing goes with the former often relying upon the latter’s components. According to a new report from Korea, Apple is contemplating having OLED displays for the Apple Watch manufactured by Samsung.
Samsung is said to be developing new OLED displays which will provide improved resolution while remaining thinner and lighter even though the overall design and touch panel structure is not expected to change that much.
LG is currently the sole OLED display supplier for Apple’s first smartwatch which is why there have been rumors that Apple wants to expand the supply chain to ensure there never really is a shortage of components for its products. The company is expected to tap Samsung on the shoulder as part of these expansion efforts.
It was also reported recently that perhaps Apple will lean on Samsung againt for faster NAND flash memory chips that provide more onboard storage for the next-generation iPhones.
If all of this is true then Samsung’s component business would certainly perform really well if it were to win such huge orders from Apple, though the company itself hasn’t said if it’s going to pick Samsung, then again we’ve never seen Apple concern itself with supply chain related stories.
