If you are supposed to be flying on United today you might want to make alternate arrangements, because it doesn’t look like United will be able to operate any flights soon. It’s nothing sinister, the airline has suffered a massive system-wide computer failure and as a result it has had to ground all flights. The Federal Aviation Administration has reported a ground stop for all flights today and it’s unclear when the issue might be resolved so that the planes can takeoff.
United hasn’t really described in detail what has caused this system-wide computer failure, only saying that it’s related to network connectivity and “user request automation issues.”
Many of the passengers who have been affected by this have taken to social media to complain about it, some are even sharing photos from airports across the country where United ground staff is having quite a busy day trying to explain to passengers why they might not be able to fly today.
This isn’t the first time that such a failure has been witnessed by United, last month an issue with “dispatching information” caused all United flights to be grounded across the country for one house. This time around the wait appears to be much, much longer.
