Last year we reported that Apple had a patent which described a security system that would be able to detect who you are based on how you interacted with your smartphone. This means that instead of relying on passwords or fingerprints, your behavioral quirks will help identify you to your phone.
Now if you thought that was a cool idea, it looks like you won’t have to wait much longer for it to be made a reality. A US military-funded security company by the name of BehavioSec has come up with something similar. According to the company, they have the technology that can readily identify users based on how they use their phone, type their messages, move their mouse, and so on.
Speaking to Business Insider, the company’s CEO Neil Costigan was quoted as saying, “You’re quite consistent in reflex stuff. If you think of all the input, there’s quite a lot going on, particularly when you get to mobile. That’s where we get out [sic] secret sauce from.” They also use contextual clues to try and gauge if you are who you say you are.
Costigan gave an example, claiming that their technology is “very similar to a credit card. You’re off at your local Tesco and then all of a sudden you’re in the Philippines and trying to buy a Rolls-Royce. It just looks a bit dodgy.” Unfortunately this technology won’t be making its way into your phones anytime soon. The company is currently focusing on the finance sector and has reportedly signed a deal with a bank in the UK.
