A rather interesting announcement has just been made at the Xbox E3 2015 press conference in Los Angeles. Xbox One was released back in 2013 and like its rival, the PlayStation, it doesn’t have backward compatibility with the Xbox 360. There has been much debate about this and while some were in favor of it, others believed that it was right of Microsoft to limit Xbox One to new or remastered titles only. The company has changed its stance though, announcing today that Xbox One backwards compatibility with Xbox 360 is coming soon.
When Xbox chief Phil Spencer made this announcement on stage during the E3 2015 the crowd understandably went wild, and cheered the company’s decision to allow Xbox One owners to play Xbox 360 titles on the console.
Xbox One backwards compatibility is going to work with around 100 titles starting this holiday season and 100 more titles will be supported after that. Microsoft is developing patches for individual titles which will ensure that backward compatibility works with both disc and online titles.
Spencer was quick to point out that this move means gamers no longer have to buy remasters, they can simply use their Xbox 360 titles which they already own, adding that this was significantly cheaper than Sony’s PlayStation Now game streaming service which lets people stream PS3 games on their PS4 for a monthly subscription.
Xbox One owners have repeatedly asked Microsoft to consider this and the company has, starting this holiday season many Xbox 360 titles will become compatible with the Xbox One.
