Sony announced its new flagship full-frame mirrorless camera today, the α7R II model ILCE-7RM2. This interchangeable lens camera features the world’s first back-illuminated full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor with 42.4 megapixel resolution, high sensitivity up to ISO 102400 and high speed AF response which Sony claims to be up to 40 percent faster than the original α7R, courtesy of 399 focal plane phase detection autofocus points.
Sony α7R II also features a 5-axis image stabilization system, it’s capable of shooting 4K video in multiple formats, even Super 35mm without pixel binning, and full-frame format.
The company says that this new 42.4 megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor is the most advanced, versatile and highest resolution full-frame image sensor that it has ever developed and this allows the α7R II to reach new heights in quality, response speed and sensitivity.
It also features the BIONZ X image processing engine which enables image and video to be captured with low noise and impressive detail, the camera does not have an optical low pass filter which ensures that landscapes are captured “in the highest possible resolution and clarity.”
The camera has a rigid magnesium alloy design with a redesigned grip and shutter button as compared to its predecessor. It also features a new mechanism to lock the mode dial along with an expanded range of customizable functions and buttons to suit the most professional of photographers.
Sony α7R II is compatible with Wi-Fi and NFC and works with Sony’s PlayMemories Mobile app that’s available for iOS and Android. The company has also launched a new LCD monitor model CLM-FHD5 which it says is the ideal companion to the α7R II for recording video.
The Sony α7R II full-frame interchangeable lens camera will be available for purchase in August for $3,200 through Sony’s online store and multiple Sony authorized dealers across the United States.
