Sidewalk Labs is an urban innovation startup that hopes to kick off its first project real soon. Having announced it to a leading group of investors, including companies that are working on the LinkNYC network that has plans to cover the whole of New York City with free and extremely fast Wi-Fi connectivity. The companies have merged to form Intersection, and Intersection will be the ones overseeing the entire introduction of LinkNYC when fall arrives, before working on a similar installation in other major cities.
From September onward, New York’s pay phone booths will start to get more and more scarce, as tall, thin pillars complete with digital tablet interfaces and large ads that are strategically located on the sides will start to phase out those phone booths. Apart from free wireless Internet access to anyone in a 150-foot radius, you will also be able to enjoy free phone charging, phone calling, Internet browsing, and access to local services and information. Sounds like a win for consumers, don’t you think so?
