Well the good news is that Google has been paying attention and it looks like they’ve been working to fix it. According to a recent update made to Chrome, it seems that Google has made some improvements to the browser where it will now result in faster performance and will no longer be a huge battery drain on Macbooks.
This was revealed by Google senior software engineer Peter Kasting who wrote that some of the improvements include, “Renderers for background tabs get a lower priority, reducing idle wakeups on various perf test, in some cases by significant amounts (e.g. 50% on one test).” It would also seem that they have made some changes to help boost its performance to put it on par with Safari.
“66% reduction in both timer firings and CPU use. Chrome is now incurring ~120 wakes over 30s and 0.1% CPU use, on par with Safari.” Users will also be pleased to learn that this isn’t all Google plans to do as there will be further improvements made in the future.
