Did you purchase a 27 inch iMac between December 2012 and September 2013? You might be eligible to receive a free hard drive upgrade from Apple. The company has launched a replacement program for the 3TB hard drives found in 27 inch iMacs sold through that particular period, it says that a “very small number” of iMacs were produced with a drive that can fail “under certain conditions,” which is way it’s going to swap out the drive for users for free.

Apple doesn’t provide the 3TB hard drive as standard on any entry-level or base iMac but the option is available to customers who want more storage for any reason whatsoever, the drive is part of Apple’s Fusion Drive which puts together a high capacity HDD with faster flash storage in one single package.

The company has now started contacting customers who may have purchased an affected machine during that time period, alternatively those who own an iMac from that period can enter the machine’s serial number on Apple’s website to find out whether or not they need to get the HDD swapped.

Apple is going to replace the 3TB hard drive for free and it doesn’t matter if the iMac is in warranty or not, just take it to the Genius Bar at an Apple Store or to any authorized Apple service technician. The company does point out that since you’ll be swapping out the hard drive you’ll need to backup your data and then restore it on the new hard drive from scratch.
