It has been a long time since Apple booted Google Maps as the default mapping service on iOS in favor of Apple Maps, a homegrown solution that didn’t exactly get off to a flying start. Even now Apple Maps is missing some features that have been available for long in other solutions. Apple Maps is also exclusive to iOS and OS X but it appears that the company does have plans to take it cross-platform in the future.
While it’s very unlikely that Apple is going to release apps for other platforms, it might take Apple Maps cross-platform through the web.
These plans came to light as a job posting by the company was discovered, the position is for a Maps JavaScript Engineer. The candidate will be tasked with helping make “maps work seamlessly on the web.”
A Web-based Maps would mean that users on different platforms would only need to punch in a URL in their web browser to access Apple Maps. It’s not like this will be a first for Apple. The iWork productivity apps and the iCloud service already works on other platforms over the web.
Apple itself has not yet confirmed that it intends to take Maps cross-platform over the web, so it can’t really be said for sure right now when it will launch this, we may have to wait for a while before that happens.
