Earlier this year there was a somewhat ludicrous rumor (then) which suggested that Apple would be creating an iPhone with a dual lens setup. However it seems that the rumors might not be such a stretch of the imagination. According to reports out of Asia, it seems that Apple has been exploring the idea for the past 3 years.

This is according to a report from Business Weekly Taiwan who cites Altek’s CEO Xiaru Wen who claims that Apple has been looking into the technology. For those wondering who is Altek, they’re the company responsible for creating the dual lens camera modules for both HTC and Huawei, so safe to say they have some experience in that area.

That being said it seems that Apple’s previously attempts were largely stuffed by their suppliers’ inability to produce enough components that meets their standards. There were also some technical hurdles where photos taken by the setup resulted in blurry images, but apparently this is an issue that has since been solved with software.

Now what seemed like a far-fetched theory at that time has slowly been substantiated with Apple acquiring LinX a couple of months ago. The company claims its technology can allow smartphones to take DSLR-like photos through the use of multiple cameras, or in the case of Apple, a possible dual lens setup.

Of course all of this remains to be seen as to whether or not Apple will implement such technology, but until then do take it with a grain of salt for now.
