With the upcoming iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, we can only assume that keeping to tradition Apple won’t be making any drastic changes in terms of design with the device. Instead it should more or less resemble the iPhone 6 in terms of design. However with 2016’s iPhone, whatever it may be called, that’s when we should expect a major revamp in terms of design.
The question is, what kind of revamp are we looking at? It might still be too soon to tell, but according to the rumors, perhaps a bezel-free display could be one of the new design features. According to a report from Patently Apple, there are rumors claiming that Apple could be thinking about moving away from the use of in-cell display technology.
Apparently this is because there are various production bottlenecks that are preventing Apple from adding new features and increasing the resolution. So the solution to this could be glass-on-glass or on-cell glass technology instead. The only problem is that while these technologies could allow new features and an increase in resolution, they might be too thick for Apple’s tastes.
One of the suppliers, TPK, is said to be only able to make a screen as thin as 8.5mm at the moment, although they believe that they could eventually reduce it to 7.1mm, although given that Apple wants to make their phones even thinner, we’re not sure if this will sit well with the Cupertino company. That being said both these technologies will apparently allow Apple to create a bezel-free iPhone, but whether or not this will happen remains to be seen.
Given that in-cell technology was used by Apple since 2012, we suppose it’s not a stretch to think that Apple will want to move on to bigger and better things, but until we hear from Apple do take it with a grain of salt for now.
