That being said as smartphones become cheaper and as technology advances, thanks to efforts by the likes of Facebook and Google – Internet.org and Project Loon respectively – it has been estimated that by 2020, 70% of the world’s population will own a smartphone. This is according to a recent study conducted by Ericsson.
According to their study, they believe that the reason the number of smartphones owned will increase is because part of it will be driven by customers in North America and Europe where owning more than one smartphone is starting to become commonplace. However the bulk of smartphone subscriptions are expected to come from emerging markets.
This includes Africa, the Middle East, and the Asia Pacific region. In fact this is pretty much the situation right now and from what we can tell, it has been going pretty well. Companies such as Microsoft and Nokia have managed to corner these markets with affordable low-end devices, and even BlackBerry still has a loyal following in the African and Indonesian markets.
