Project Ara Smartphone Prototype Demonstrated

We did mention how Project Ara might very well be featured on stage at MWC 2015 earlier this year, but it did look as though that failed to come to pass. Well, fret not, as it looks as though the Project Ara smartphone prototype was demonstrated for all and sundry to check out at Google I/O. In fact, it was Google’s Rafa Camargo who paraded a fully functioning Project Ara prototype at the the ATAP keynote.

It is interesting to note that Google did demonstrated different components of the Project Ara smartphone in the past, but at Google I/O, it marks the very first time that the smartphone itself has been assembled from various parts to end up working in unison. As the Google engineer did the assembly of the smartphone, he then turned it on to show that it works, before sliding in the camera module, and the coup de grace of the demonstration was to snap a photo of everyone present.

It looks like assembling the handset was not too difficult at all, but there was still no word by Google as to when this particular device is set to roll out to the masses, although whispers abound that Google will enable the public over at Puerto Rico to test-drive the project some time down the road in 2015.
