NVIDIA had said in March that it will release the NVIDIA Shield console in May and it has kept its promise. The company announced today that this Android TV powered gaming console is now available for purchase, orders can be placed today at Amazon, Best Buy and NVIDIA’s website. This is the company’s first living room entertainment device and it says that the Shield is going to “redefine your TV experience.”
This slim angular console topped off with a green streak of light touts the NVIDIA Tegra X1 mobile chip under the hood hooked up to 3GB of RAM. It’s capable of streaming 4K video from online services which offer it, such as Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, YouTube and others.
It’s powered by Android TV so the Shield can access all apps and services that you would expect on an Android TV set-top box. Since it’s also meant to be a gaming device the Shield can stream games via NVIDIA’s GRID game streaming service.
NVIDIA Shield with 16GB storage can be purchased for $199. There’s also a Pro version with 500GB storage as well as Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, it costs $299. Both options come with a game controller. Accessories available for this device include additional game controllers for $59.99, a slim remote for $49.99 and a stand to prop up the Shield vertically for $29.99.
For a limited time customers who purchase the NVIDIA Shield or NVIDIA Shield Pro get $30 Google Play store credit and a 90-day subscription to Google Play Music All Access.
