This actually something of a milestone for the app as it beat out its Twitter-made competitor Periscope which is currently still an iOS-only app. Of course there’s no saying that Meerkat users won’t switch over to Periscope when the Android version is released, but for now it looks like Meerkat is in the lead and has the advantage.
For those hearing about the app for the first time, basically apps such as Meerkat and Periscope act as live streaming apps where followers of a particular user can tune in and watch that user stream video live. In some ways we suppose it seems like Twitch where you can watch the user do all sorts of things live.
It sounds like it could come in handy for journalists covering an event live, but recently it was found that these apps can also be used for piracy where Periscope was actually used to live stream Game of Thrones episodes, much to the annoyance of HBO.
