A report from 9to5Mac has revealed that Apple is set to change the font of iOS 9 and OS X 10.11. The font in question will be the same San Francisco font used on the Apple Watch. The font is expected to be applied to menu items, app names, and more. Apparently it seems that many aren’t too pleased with Helvetica Neue.
The complaints are that while the font is nicely designed with clean lines, it makes it hard to read due to its thin weight, something which the San Francisco font is expected to change. However within Apple there seems to be a bit of a debate. Apple exec appear to be happy with the font as it helps refresh the look of its operating systems to prevent it from being stale.
Apple engineers on the other hand don’t seem too thrilled as apparently the font won’t look as good on non-Retina devices. In any case we expect that more details on iOS 9 and OS X 10.11 will be shared at WWDC 2015 which takes place early June, so check back with us then for the details.
