HBO confirmed its internet TV streaming service at Apple’s Spring Forward event in March and as reported, the service was made exclusive to Apple’s devices for three months. That exclusivity has now ended. It has been confirmed today at Google I/O 2015 that HBO Now is coming to Android, the standalone application will soon be available from the Google Play Store.
During the time this service was exclusive to Apple’s devices, only apps for iOS were available and the service will also brought over to the Apple TV. it was still possible to access it through a web browser but that hardly provides a good experience on a mobile device.
HBO Now did expand its reach during that period by launching on Sling TV, Dish’s over-the-top service which provides access to quite a few channels. Since the service was accessible through Sling TV apps, users could stream HBO live on devices like the Fire TV stick and even the Xbox One.
Nothing is going to beat an official Android app though, which is going to have full support for Google Cast and Chromecast. With the formal announcement coming today expect the official HBO Now app for Android to go live on the Google Play Store this summer, it’s going to be a free download, but the service is limited to the U.S. and costs $15 per month.
