Fiat CEO Claims Apple Might Be Interested In A Car Intervention

There have been rumors that Apple is thinking about entering the automotive industry and not just by providing the platform for car infotainment units. If the rumors are to be believed, Apple wants in on the automotive industry in a big way by creating their own electric/self-driving car. How true is this? Well according to Fiat’s CEO, it seems that Apple is interested in the automotive industry at the very least.

According to a report from Reuters, Fiat’s CEO Sergio Marchionne met with up Apple’s CEO Tim Cook over the weekend as part of his pit stop in California. Unsurprisingly when asked what went down in his meeting with Cook, Marchionne kept relatively mum on the issue and only offered this quote, “He’s interested in Apple’s intervention in the car, that’s his role.”

It’s a rather cryptic statement as it could mean just about anything. Apple has shown interest in vehicles through the launch of CarPlay, a platform designed for cars that basically integrates iOS into vehicles, allowing drivers to access information on their mobile device without having to look at their phone.

That being said Marchionne does not appear to be too fazed or worried that if Apple were to launch their own car, it would end up competing with his company amongst others. However other carmakers such as Tesla haven’t really shown much worry about Apple’s rumored entrance into the car-making business, so either these companies don’t think Apple has what it takes, or that the rumors are simply that, just rumors.
