Developer support is essential for the survival of a software platform in this day and age, and Google wants you to know that it has plenty of developer support for its wearable platform. During the keynote address at Google I/O 2015 today the company revealed that so far developers have created more than 4,000 apps for Android Wear. It was also revealed that Uber is launching an app for this platform, thus enabling Android Wear smartwatches to call you a car.
Uber has been aggressive to support new platforms and launch apps for a variety of form factors so it’s not surprising to see it on Android Wear as well. One can understand the ease of use this app will afford people who regularly hail an Uber to move around. They won’t have to dig out their smartphones to call a car.
The Uber for Android Wear app was demonstrated on stage today at Google I/O 2015. Calling a car is simple, just say “OK, Google, call me a car” and it’ll work out everything in the background to summon an Uber driver to the user’s location.
Foursquare will be coming to Android Wear as well, providing information about popular spots near a user’s location. Shazam is jumping on the bandwagon as well, letting users detect songs by tapping into the smartwatch’s internal microphone.
Spotify was another big name that was mentioned today, its Android Wear app will let users stream and browse music.
