We know that Google likes to name major Android releases after desserts and with the successor of Android 5.0 Lollipop expected in a couple of days at I/O 2015 speculation has started to mount regarding the moniker of Android M, the next major Android release that Google will unveil at I/O 2015. If a new report is to be believed, internally Android M’s codename is MNC or Macadamia Nut Cookie.
The “MNC” moniker has showed up a couple of times in AOSP so there just might be some truth to this, and AndroidPolice reports that it has heard from sources that internally the OS is being referred to as Macadamia Nut Cookie.
Some of the internal codenames that Google has used in the past include Key Lime Pie and Lemon Meringue Pie though these monikers were not used for the final public releases, instead the company went with KitKat and Lollipop.
The possibility exists that the public moniker may not be Macadamia Nut Cookie and Google might come up with some other dessert’s name when it publicly unveils Android M.
There hasn’t been much chatter yet on what name the Lollipop successor is going to have, people don’t expect Google to move away from its convention of naming major releases after desserts though.
Now that I/O 2015 is just around the corner it’s not like we’ll have to wait for a long time to find out what the next release of Android is going to be called.
