Yahoo, once the darling of the tech industry, is not quite done just yet, and have a rather large presence online even at this moment, too. They basically aren’t going anywhere, and here is an interesting item that the company is working on – a new kind of ear-based smartphone identification system. In other words, Yahoo is looking for a way to let users unlock their smartphones with one’s ear – rather than to rely on a password or fingerprint.
While it makes sense to use one’s fingerprint to unlock the device due to the uniqueness of a fingerprint in each individual, who would have thought that one’s ear would be used eventually? Granted, the fingerprint idea is so much more convenient, since you are about to use the handset already, so imagine unlocking the phone with your ear, only to bring it down once again to use it with your thumb or finger. That is like, one more motion which we do not really need at this moment in such a fast paced world.
Still, it is encouraging to hear of such developments, and apparently, Yahoo too, are working on making use of one’s fists, or perhaps even explore the way a person grips his or her smartphone as alternative forms of biometric authentication. At least recognizing the ear is not going to be as expensive as implementing biometric identification as found in the iPhone 6.
