A standard Wi-Fi router probably isn’t going to have an eye-catching design. It’ll most likely look like a block painted either white or some other neutral color with antennas sticking up, you can spot it from a mile away. What if you could have a really cool Wi-Fi router that looked amazing and got the job of keeping you connected to the internet done at the same time? How about a router that looks like the USS Enterprise, that would be awesome, wouldn’t it?
Unfortunately there’s no company out there that’s making routers designed like the USS Enterprise so you’ll have to get your hands dirty.
Rol Schwarz and Christoph Kauch have created their own USS Enterprise router by hooking up a Ubiquiti Unifi router inside a Revell 1:600 model of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701.
Since it’s a pretty basic access point there isn’t a lot of work involved in inserting it inside the Enterprise model. Only one Ethernet port needed wiring into the stand but all of the rest was pretty easy.
Schwarz and Kauch have posted a making-of video on YouTube which details just how they put together this USS Enterprise Wi-Fi router. It’s a simple project and if you happen to have some free time on your hands and would like to satisfy your inner geek, perhaps you should try it out as well.
