This was initially reported by the Hollywood Reporter and was later confirmed by The Simpsons’ showrunner Al Jean on Twitter who wrote, “I personally am v sorry to see DVDs discontinued We did them purely for the love of hearing ourselves talk.” The reason for the discontinuation of the DVDs? According to distribution sources, it would seem that slumping sales of the DVDs are to blame and to be fair this doesn’t really come as a surprise.
As one of the Hollywood Reporters’ sources said, “There’s so much happening in the digital space, it made more sense to focus on that.” That statement is particularly true because like we said earlier, there are plenty of other mediums in which one can consume their video content, and given how mobile we are and with mobile devices starting to sport larger displays, watching video on our phones, tablets, or laptops on the go is becoming more common.
Now the good news is that if you bought the DVDs purely for its additional scenes or commentary, you will be pleased to learn that these features will live on in their digital formats, the only difference is that now you won’t have a physical copy of the show to display on your shelf.
