Sharp Announces 5.5-inch 4K IGZO Display For 2016

Smartphones with a Full HD display are pretty common nowadays, although flagship smartphones this year seem to be adopting the 2K resolution. However it seems that before 2K even becomes a standard amongst smartphones, it looks like manufacturers are already thinking about making the jump to 4K.

Sharp has recently announced a 5.5-inch 4K IGZO display which based on its size, sounds like it would be perfect for a smartphone. However the company states that mass production of the display panel is only scheduled for 2016, so it looks like we won’t be seeing it this year. That being said if we were to think about it, a 4K resolution in a 5.5-inch display essentially means we are looking a pixel density of 806ppi!

Of course we have to wonder what kind of drain such a display would have on our smartphone’s battery, but hopefully by then smartphone OEMs and technology would have come up with batteries that can last much longer or at the very least charge fast enough where it won’t become an inconvenience.

Now Sharp isn’t the only company thinking about 4K smartphones. A rumor from last week has suggested that Samsung could be thinking of launching 4K displays as well and that this year’s Samsung Galaxy Note 5 could very well pack such a high-res display, although it remains to be seen whether or not that will happen, but based on this it sounds like the 4K revolution is upon us.
