The Windows Phone platform is a good one, but unfortunately due to a lack of apps and the unwillingness of customers to adopt the platform has led to it commanding a rather tiny market share, something that we assume Microsoft wants to change with the launch of Windows 10. However it seems that despite the small market share, Microsoft’s Lumia business appears to be doing pretty well.
The company has announced during its recent earnings call that they have managed to sell 8.6 million Lumia handsets in the most recent quarter. This is rather impressive as this represents an 18% increase over last year, or so Microsoft claims as neither Microsoft nor Nokia (back then) had announced any sales figures.
That being said despite the increase in sales, overall Windows Phone revenue is said to have dropped by 16%. In total Microsoft managed to make $21.7 billion in revenue with a net profit of $4.98 billion. Revenue is said to be a 6% increase from the same quarter last year, but net profit has dipped by 12%, although Microsoft attributes this to the money spent restructuring and integrating Nokia’s mobile phone business into the company.
As for Microsoft’s flagship smartphone, the company had previously stated that they have no plans to release one, at least until Windows 10 is ready. No word on when that is although the desktop version is said to be released late July, so hopefully the mobile version won’t be too far behind.
