LG Display is Apple’s biggest display partner so one can expect it to have some insight on Cupertino’s upcoming products, since it will be making displays for them. LG Display published a detailed article recently describing 8K screens that offer a mind-boggling 7,680×4,320 pixel resolution. In that article LG apparently inadvertently let it slip that an “iMac 8K” will be released by Apple in 2015.
Here’s where LG mentions the iMac 8K in the article: “It has become clear that Japan is planning to launch an 8K SHV test broadcast and then promptly restructure the UHD service. Apple has also announced that they will release the ‘iMac 8K’ with a super-high resolution display later this year.”
Those who keep a keen eye on all things Apple know that so far in 2015 the company has not announced an iMac with 8K display. It hasn’t even hinted about this possibility so this begs the question, what is LG Display on about?
The possibility exists that this just might be a factual error on LG’s part, but one that does make some sense, given late last year Apple introduced the iMac with 5K display.
Whether or not such a high resolution display will be of any use on an iMac that doesn’t offer screen sizes above 27-inch is a totally other debate.
Even if Apple doesn’t have an iMac 8K on the cards for 2015, perhaps it might be in the roadmap for 2016? Who knows, anything is possible.
