Read through a list of the most iconic vehicles ever made and you’re likely to come across the Volkswagen Camper, better known as the “hippie wagon.” It’s shape is instantly recognizable all over the world and it’s associated with the laid back, peaceful attitude of the ’70s. There’s hope that it may be revived as an electric vehicle, this according to Volkswagen board member Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser who revealed at the New York Auto Show that the company is working on a new camper concept.
Even though it’s going to be a completely new project the new camper is going to retain the iconic design elements of the original Type 2 microbus which was first launched in Germany back in 1950.
However things will be different under the hood. Instead of having a petrol powered engine the car will be powered by batteries and an electric motor will drive the front wheels.
Currently the new camper is a concept at Volkswagen and the company will first judge whether the cost of production is feasible, only then will the new car be brought to market.
This is why it’s too soon to put a timeframe on when it will arrive, and how much it will cost when it finally hits roads.
