The last time Google gave its dialer app for Android an update, it allowed users to search for businesses or individuals who were not necessarily saved to the user’s contact list. It was a pretty nifty update that made calling businesses an easier and quicker process. However a report from The Information (paywall; via 9to5Google) claims that Google is working on an updated version of it.
As it stands, the dialer that allows users to search for businesses is limited to devices running on stock Android, which pretty much means that only Nexus handsets have access to it, unless you have a device that you flashed the stock Android ROM onto. However with the updated dialer, it seems that Google could be bringing the feature across Android handsets, or at least make it a download that all Android handsets can access.
The new dialer is also said to offer up a tighter integration with messaging, but unfortunately apart from these details, not much else is known. However Google I/O 2015 will be kicking off from the 28-29th of May so perhaps more details about Google’s updated dialer will be shared then.
In the meantime it is speculated that Google’s update to its dialer could be in response to Facebook’s reported attempt at a dialer which has yet to manifest itself publicly. It is also said that Google is looking to fight Yahoo who reportedly is developing an app that will offer a mix of text and video.
